The Stars Between

This is a short prototype game I made with 3 other peers, which portrays the story of Rowan and Willow, a sapphic couple who go on a fishing trip to break up with each other.

Gameplay

Simple and fun fishing is the main gameplay portion of this game. The player plays as our character Rowan, who is a passionate fisher!

The player can cast the rod in any direction on the water (point and click with a mouse), hold down the left click to reel in the fish, and a final pop up will inform you of your catch.

My peers and I designed gameplay this way so that the narrative portion can be the focus of the game, but also allow for a fun and enjoyable play through.

Narrative/Dialogue

In this project, I handled all production and assisted in narrative design. Some design choices I made to contribute to narrative was the dialogue structure and base concepts. My Lead in narrative design then took my concepts/drafts and finalized them into the dialogue.

Willow and Rowan are both AFAB (assigned female at birth) and they are in a sapphic relationship (Sapphic: a woman or woman-aligned person of any sexual orientation who is attracted to women or woman-aligned genders/gender identities). Willow and Rowan have been going through a rough patch in their relationship, and since they had already planned this fishing trip, they decide to go on the trip together anyways. The tension between them builds in this space themed story, and they eventually break-up. The player is given hints to this tension throughout the game, whether it be the lack of celebration from a catch, critical comments, or awkward silence.
